Imagine going to work, or walking down the street, and every other person you see is wearing a T-shirt with the logo “Let’s Talk About It”. “Talk about what?” you ask. The reply: “Mental Illness.”
In October 2010 with the financial support of NL Power, along with many community partners, the Consumers’ Health Awareness Network Newfoundland and Labrador (CHANNAL) proudly introduced our creative campaign, “Let’s Talk About It”. The “Let’s Talk About It” Campaign was created to dispel this silence and stigma around mental illness. It was a tremendous success! Over 2100 people province-wide decided to talk about the impact of mental illness in their lives.
This year, as Mental Illness Awareness Week opens, we are asking you to continue this amazing initiative. By wearing your “Let’s Talk About It” T-shirt on Monday, October 3rd, as well as throughout the week, you are telling others that mental illness has affected your life in some way, and you are ready to break the silence – ready to diminish the stigma. The “Let’s Talk About It” Campaign offers an opportunity for people to ask questions and start to share experiences. We know that of those who experience mental illness, stigma prevents two-thirds of us from seeking support. We hope to change attitudes about mental illness by breaking down the discrimination and the silence surrounding such an important issue.
Through the support of our communities, we at CHANNAL envision that such movements as “Let’s Talk About It” will continue to tell individuals living with mental illness that we are all in this together and we can make a difference. We strive to raise awareness in all of our communities about the issues and concerns that people living with mental illness face each day.
We are ALL committed to breaking the silence and stigma that surround mental illnesses – come visit our calendar to see what activities are happening in your area as we gather to share our experience of how mental illness has affected our life. Also, visit Community Sector Council (CSC) to see the support our community partners offer for this awareness campaign.
